I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
