I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items from the area, and clean up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

The toilet has its own tap behind the toilet bowl.
