I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. If you are unable to find the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
