I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any significant items from the area, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
