I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as possible to save the day.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
