I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
